Interim Zoning Ordinance Approved for Production and Processing of Marijuana in Unincorporated Areas

April 07, 2014 Building and Planning Department
(509) 477-3675

The Spokane County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved an Interim Zoning Ordinance that establishes additional setbacks for structures that will be engaged in the production and/or processing of recreational marijuana in rural, resource, and mineral lands in unincorporated Spokane County.

According to the interim zoning ordinance, “…an indoor or outdoor production or processing facility, temporary growing structures, greenhouse, or structure must be located a minimum of 100 feet from any front property line and 300 feet from any side, flanking, or rear property line. Provided, however, that at no time shall the parcel, lot or tract be less than eight (8) acres in size”.

These setback standards were imposed to address potential impacts that include odors, effect on property values, and the potential increase in crime related to the location of production and processing structures that are in proximity to single family residences.

The interim ordinance is effective immediately. A public hearing will be scheduled within 60 days from today, allowing the Board of County Commissioners to take testimony on the interim ordinance, before making a decision to either ratify or revoke it.
