Spokane River Centennial Trail
A local treasure, the Spokane River Centennial Trail was recently designated a National Recreation Trail by Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar.
The Spokane River Centennial Trail is a 37 mile paved recreational trail for pedestrians and non-motorized vehicles. The trail stretches from Sontag Park in Nine Mile Falls, Washington to the Washington / Idaho state line. It continues another 24 miles beyond the Washington state border into Idaho as the North Idaho Centennial trial through Post Falls and into Coeur d'Alene.
This scenic trail following the Spokane River was originally planned by the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission following the 1974 World's Fair and Expo in Spokane, Washington. The fully paved mixed-use pathway was expanded to it's current length through the support of enthusiastic citizens of Washington and Idaho.
The Centennial Trail has become extremely popular over its 20 year history, and is enjoyed by walkers, runners and cyclists of all ability levels. Use count in 2008 exceeded 2 million visits. The Centennial Trail is ADA accessible and 30 miles of the trail are classified as Class 1 trail, separated from motorized traffic.
