ASP Instructor Certification Course |
| Description: |
The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office has partnered with ASP to host an ASP Instructor Certification course. This training is 3-days in length, a full 8-hours each day. It consists of two days of baton training and one day of handcuff training. It is intense training and participants should be in good physical shape. At the completion of training, students will be required to pass a written and performance test in order to become ASP Certified Instructors. An equipment list and the Training Briefing Bulletin will be sent to registrants one month prior to the course start date. The course fee is fully refundable upon successful completion of the course. |

Boating Accident Investigation and Analysis Course |
| Description: |
With grant assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard, the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA), in conjunction with the WA State Parks and Recreation Commission, will offer a 5-day boating accident investigation course. This course is designed to provide investigating officers with all the tools they need to completely and accurately investigate a recreational boating accident. Topics covered include: Accidents; statistics; vessel construction; standards and regulations; electricity; navigation lights; ignition protection; carbon monoxide; fuel systems; fires and explosions; ventilation; diagramming; stability; capacity and loading; collision basics; public relations; personal watercraft; report construction; court preparations; and environmental concerns. This course also includes the popular vessel systems examinations and examinations of actual case studies. |

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office has partnered with Jeff Hall and Force Options, LLC to host a Defensive Duty Knife course. This eight-hour knife course is designed to instruct and certify the officer in the defensive use of the duty knife. Topics covered include: selection of the knife, methods of carry, methods of deployment, use of force policy issues, deadly force, standing uses, ground fighting uses, target areas, incapacitation of the threat, the appropriate use of aggression, footwork drills, strong and support hand use, and documentation and articulation of use. Duty Knife Instructor |
| Description: |
The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office has partnered with Jeff Hall and Force Options, LLC to host a Duty Knife Instructor course. This class will train and certify the officer to instruct the Defensive Duty Knife. Folding knives are carried by virtually all police officers in the country. Properly trained, the knife can be used lawfully within the force continuum. Each graduate will receive a sample policy, instructor manual, and DVD/Powerpoint lesson plan. Topics covered will include selection of the duty knife, policy writing and the force continuum, knife defense, knife attack angles, footwork drills, effective communication for the fighting instructor, carry locations, and the knife culture. Make check payable to Force Options, LLC and send in with completed registration. |

Forensic Document Examination |
| Description: |
This one-hour course, presented three different times throughout the day, will teach you how the Questioned Document of the WSP Crime Lab analyzes handwriting, inks, paper; conducts document authentication; and processes for indented writing and alterations. This course will provide the following: Instruction on how to take a handwriting exemplar that will get the most information for the examiner; tips on how to recognize and deter disguise in a handwriting exemplar; overview of the types of services offered to assist in casework; guidelines to submit evidence for the most expedient service; and explanation of reported laboratory conclusions. When registering, please indicate which time session you wish to attend. Session times are 0900-1000, 1100-1200, and 1300-1400. |

Child Passenger Safety Seat Technician Renewal Course |
| Description: |
This course is designed to renew the certification for expired technicians who wish to become nationally certified Child Passenger Safety technicians (CPSTs) again. After successfully completing this course, students will be re-certified and be able to provide both individual and group CPS education. Previously certified instructors who recertify through the renewal course will be recertified as technicians and must repeat the instructor candidacy process in order to regain certification as an instructor.
This course is for people who have stayed active and current in child passenger safety. Teaching strategies include a brief lecture, skills testing, and a written test. Successful participation in all lectures and assessments leads to national re-certification as a CPST.
Individuals who successfully complete this course will become nationally certified CPSTs. The re-certification process requires technician candidate (student) attendance and active participation throughout the ent |

You will learn how to constructively hone your skills in many areas, including leadership and supervision, communication, managing time and priorities, dealing with problem employees, public sector ethics, and avoiding/responding to claims of harassment, bullying, discrimination, and potential employment related liability. Class is sponsored by the Washington Counties Risk Pool and is free for member counties. The second day is a half day, ending at 1200. |
