Substance Abuse Advisory Board

Purpose of the Substance Abuse Advisory Board

Members are citizen volunteers whose role and responsibility to advocate for consumers of substance abuse services and to advise the Community Services Department and Spokane County Commissioners on matters relating to the development, delivery, improvement, and funding of substance-related services within Spokane County.

Community Services Building, 312 W. 8th Ave, Spokane WA, Fifth Floor Conference Room

Meets the fourth Monday of every month at 4:00 pm

Member Specifications

Members: 10

Term: 3 years

Details: Minimum qualifications are as follows:

  • Residence status within Spokane County
  • Have no interest in or participate in the business of an agency contracting with or submitting proposals to the Spokane County Community Services Substance Abuse Treatment Prevention Department
  • A willingness to learn and gain knowledge of drug/alcohol prevention and treatment as well as an understanding of the disease concept regarding substances
  • Commitment to the philosophy of providing a quality system of services for residents and their families of Spokane County who suffer from the consequences of substance abuse or addiction and their families and who are low income, indigent, or specialized populations. The advisory board is committed to preserve the dignity of the consumer, to recognize diversity, and to ensure that services are provided for treatment and prevention of the disease without discrimination, prejudice, or moral judgment
  • Positively represents the Spokane County Substance Abuse Advisory Board activities including assisting new board members with orientation and mentoring

Responsibilities/Time Commitment

Members must be prepared to represent citizens and consumers of the county in their opinions, recommendations, and advice.

Attendance at 10 Substance Abuse Advisory Board meetings. There could be special functions such as funding events/trainings that require additional time commitments. Time averages about 4 hours a month.
