Ballots for the General Election on Tuesday, November 3, 2009, will soon be arriving in mail boxes. Nearly 255,000 are being sent to voters in Spokane County this week. If a voter has not received their ballot by October 23rd, the voter should contact the Elections Office at (509) 477-2320 for a replacement.
Voters can return completed ballots in several ways. Ballots can be mailed by affixing first class postage and ensuring a postmark of election day or prior. Also, ballots can be deposited into one of the white election drop boxes that are located at most public libraries as well as the STA plaza. Finally, the ballot can be dropped off at one of the five voter service centers that will be open on Election Day.
Citizens who are not yet registered to vote in Washington have until Monday, October 26, 2009, to register. This deadline is only for new registrations and must be done in person at the Elections Office, located at 1033 W Gardner.
Voters can help ensure that their ballots are properly counted. First, completely fill in the oval to the left of your selection so the counting machines can read it easily. Second, sign and date the return envelope so the signature can be compared to the one on file. In some elections, nearly 1% of the voters forget to sign the envelope. Lastly, if mailing the ballot back to the Elections Office, be certain that the postmark is no later than Election Day. As much as 1% of the ballots returned to us cannot be counted because the postmark is after Election Day.
