The printed voter’s pamphlet containing information about the two state ballot measures is now arriving in mailboxes. Information about the local issues and races are not included in the voter’s pamphlet but are available online at www.spokanecounty.org/elections.
For the past two general elections of 2007 and 2008, local issues and races for Spokane County were included in the voter’s pamphlet printed by the Secretary of State’s Office. The cost of printing and mailing for those two pamphlets was paid for by a federal grant under the Help America Vote Act.
In 2009, the cost of the printing and mailing would have been borne by the local jurisdictions. This would have been an additional cost of approximately $80,000 to cities, towns, school districts, fire districts and other special districts in Spokane County. Feedback from the voters indicated that they liked having a paper document to study. Unfortunately, in these tough economic times, difficult decisions must be made, such as not printing a local voter’s pamphlet. Fortunately, the information is still available through the County’s website.
Since 2001, candidate statements and ballot titles have been posted on the Spokane County web site. The web address is www.spokanecounty.org/elections. This year, the complete text of the local issues is also available as a separate link on that web page. The current online voter’s guide system was made possible by a federal grant under the Help America Vote Act. The online guide is now used by 30 Washington counties.
