Spokane County Correction Lieutenants Reach Agreement on Concessions

The Correction Lieutenants (Local 492CL) have reached an agreement with Spokane County for concessions that will help offset budget cuts in 2010. The Correction Lieutenants work in the County Jail and Geiger Corrections Facility. Today, an agreement was signed to waive their rights to a 1% COLA effective January 1, 2010, and to another 1% on July 1, 2010. They also agreed to waive their rights to overtime and comp time. In return, Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich agreed that no members of 492CL would be demoted in an attempt to satisfy the projected 2010 budget shortfall.

The Board of County Commissioners thanked the leadership and members of 492CL. “The Correction Lieutenants need to be applauded for their efforts to address the County budget shortfall,” stated Board Chairman Todd Mielke. “This group has consistently put protecting area residents first. Their concessions will maintain staffing levels and continue that commitment to serve the public,” he added.

Spokane County is facing a projected $10.5 million budget shortfall for 2010 and the Board of County Commissioners must approve a balanced budget by December 8, 2009. Currently, elected officials and departments directors are meeting with union officials and considering proposals to address budget shortfalls. Proposals brought forth to date include furloughs, elimination of the 2010 COLA (2.5%), and reduced hours of operation.
