Judge Jeremy T. Schmidt is the current Juvenile Judge for Spokane County Superior Court serving on the Superior Court bench since August 2022, first as a Superior Court Commissioner and then as Superior Court Judge for Department 9. Prior to his appointment, he was a Senior Attorney at Counsel for Defense, 2015-2022. He also serves as an Adjunct Professor at Gonzaga University School of Law, 2018 to present. A lifelong resident of Spokane County, Judge Schmidt is a graduate of Gonzaga Preparatory High School, 2001. Attending college in Montana, he graduated from Carroll College, Helena, Mt., 2005, before returning to Spokane and graduating from Gonzaga University School of Law, 2008. Judge Schmidt was a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney for Pend Oreille and Lincoln Counties, 2010-2015. He began his career as an Attorney for the Spokane County Public Defender’s Office, 2008-2010. Judge Schmidt’s career has been primarily focused on the prosecution and defense of major felony criminal cases, he has gained experience in juvenile law, family law, civil litigation and termination/dependency cases in his role as a judicial officer.
Judge Schmidt currently serves on the Washington State Superior Court Judges Association Committee for Guardianship and Probate, the board for the Criminal Justice(law enforcement) Program for Spokane School District’s NEWTech Program, coaches Gonzaga University School of Law’s National Trial Team. He has participated in the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission trial exercise for law enforcement cadets, and training for the Public Defender’s Office, the Spokane County Bar Association, the Spokane County Guardianship Monitoring Program and the Washington Prosecutor’s Association in areas of jury selection, trial preparation, trial practice, case preparation, and court visitor training. He has judged numerous law school competitions for Gonzaga University School of Law. Outside of his legal and judicial activities he has been a small college sports writer, Carrol College football radio commentator, youth athletics coach in the Spokane Parochial League (football and basketball) and still lives and works on his families cattle ranch.
