American Red Cross Certification Courses
Spokane County Aquatics offers Red Cross Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor courses each spring/summer at the Northside Family Aquatics Facility in Colbert, WA. Please browse our courses below, and if you have questions, feel free to contact us at 509-477-4730 or by email.

Blended Learning Lifeguard Training Courses
American Red Cross Lifeguarding courses provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies all within an online and formal course setting. Blended learning combines online learning with on-site skills sessions. Students are required to complete the online lessons prior to the corresponding skills session. Upon successful completion of the LGT course, participants receive American Red Cross Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certificates that are valid for 2 years.

Course Prerequisites
This course is strictly limited to those individuals that are at least age 15 by conclusion of the course and are able to successfully demonstrate the prerequisite swimming skills evaluation. The prerequisite swimming skills evaluation is completed on the first day and includes the following skills:
- 300 yard swim: Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may use front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both, but swimming on the back is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
- Tread water: Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates must place their hands under their armpits and keep their head above water.
- Times Event: Starting in the water, swim 20-yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 12 feet, retrieve a 10-pound dive brick, return to the surface, swim 20-yards on the back returning to the starting point with both hands holding the brick and exit the water without using a ladder or steps. Must be completed within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Swim goggles are not allowed. Candidates should not swim the return distance under water.
Bring a towel, dry clothes, a snack, and appropriate swim wear to each class.

Blended Learning Lifeguard Review Course
(re-certification course)
The purpose of the review course is to give currently certified American Red Cross Lifeguards the opportunity to review course content within an online and formal course setting. Blended learning combines online learning with on-site skills sessions. Students are required to complete the online lessons prior to the corresponding skills session. The review course format optimizes the participant's ability to successfully complete the knowledge and skills evaluations. Upon successful completion, candidates renew their American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification for 2 years.

Course Prerequisites
Bring your current Red Cross LGT card with you to first day of class. The purpose of the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Course is to provide instructor candidates with the skills needed to teach courses and make presentations to swimmers of every age and ability. Blended learning combines online learning with on-site skills sessions. Students are required to complete the online lessons prior to the corresponding skills sessions.

Course Prerequisites
Minimum age of 16. Fundamentals of Instructor Training Course (FIT) will be provided with the course. Demonstrate swimming skills by swimming the following strokes:
- Back Crawl - 25 yards
- Breaststroke - 25 yards
- Butterfly - 15 yards
- Elementary backstroke - 25 yards
- Front Crawl - 25 yards
- Maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling)
- Sidestroke - 25 yards
- Tread water for 1 minute
