- Gravel Road Stabilization Trial
Gravel Road Stabilization Trial
Project Manager: Adam Packer
Project Timeline: 4-15-20 through 6-1-20
Project Description: Gravel Stabilization
Project Overview
Gravel roads in Spokane County experience a variety of traffic – from family vehicles to farm equipment – and often suffer the effects of our four-season weather. In other words, that’s a lot of wear and tear and it can be challenging to maintain the road surface. To continue to address this ongoing problem, the Board of County Commissioners has provided funding to continue this program. Spokane County will be continuing treatment on 8 roads and beginning treatment on 2 new roads that will participate in the gravel road stabilization trial.
At these 10 sites (listed below), county crews will be repairing soft spots in the roadway, adding crushed surfacing, and applying a gravel stabilization treatment. This work will begin in May, depending on the weather. The repairs and graveling will take approximately one week, and applying the stabilization treatment will take two days. This treatment will provide a firm, stable roadway that will resist deterioration for up to one-year. One of the key takeaways from this trial will be exactly how long the treatment lasts before requiring maintenance work.
We are continuing this trial with the expectation of positive results. This is still a trial, you should not anticipate that it will necessarily continue.
If you have any questions or concerns, please let us know. The Material Resource Manager Adam Packer will be managing this trial. He may be contacted at 509.477.3600 or at apacker@spokanecounty.org

To address this ongoing problem, the Board of County Commissioners has provided funding for 8 sites to participate in a gravel road stabilization trial.
At these 8 sites (listed below), county crews will be repairing soft spots in the roadway, adding crushed surfacing, and finally applying a gravel stabilization treatment. This work will begin in mid-May, depending on the weather. The repairs and graveling will take approximately one week, and applying the stabilization treatment will take two days. This treatment will provide a firm, stable roadway that will resist deterioration for up to one-year. One of the key takeaways from this trial will be exactly how long the treatment lasts before requiring maintenance work.
Please note that we are doing this trial with the expectation that it will last up to one-year, but again – this is a trial project. It may not be effective or warrant repeating the process.
