Wanted Geiger Work Crew Walk Away Captured After Attempt to Flee

Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies captured Keith A. Smith, a wanted Geiger Work Crew Inmate, who walked away from his assigned work detail on March 29, 2018.  Smith attempted to flee again but his actions resulted in additional charges instead of his escape.

On April 4, 2018, just after 10:00 p.m., while following up on tips Smith was frequenting mobile homes at the Takesa Village Mobile Home Park, located in the 11800 block of N. Wilson St., Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputy Stan Kravtsov observed a suspicious black Ford Taurus.  The trunk was open, full of property and no one appeared to be around.

As Deputy Kravtsov advised Dispatch he was checking on the suspicious vehicle, he observed Smith’s girlfriend exit the driver’s seat and walk back toward the trunk.  He contacted the female at the rear of the vehicle as Deputy Phil Pfeifer, with his partner K9 Enzo, arrived to assist.

Deputy Kravtsov approached the passenger side of the vehicle and observed Smith sitting inside.  Instead of following Deputy Kravtsov’s commands, Keith looked frantic and locked the door.  As Deputy Pfeifer approached on the driver’s side, Smith moved into the driver’s seat, locked the door, and started the vehicle.  Smith grazed a pole and drove over some larger rocks as he recklessly fled the parking lot and out of sight.

Deputy Kravtsov and Deputy Pfeifer began checking the area for the vehicle as additional Deputies responded to the area to assist.  In the area of Florence and Sheridan, Deputy Kravtsov located some fresh tire tracks and followed them into another mobile home park.  He located the unoccupied Taurus crashed into the porch of a residence.

A perimeter of the area was quickly established and Deputy Pfeifer deployed K9 Enzo to help locate Smith.

A short time later, Deputies observed Smith inside a fenced storage area.  Smith, followed by the owner of the facility (holding a club), yelled he was “done running”, went down to the ground and followed commands.

After he was safely taken into custody, Smith was provided medical attention for a cut he received while climbing the fence.  He was transported and booked into the Spokane County Jail for his original misdemeanor charge in addition to new misdemeanor charges of Escape 3rd Degree, Obstructing Law Enforcement and Hit and Run-Property Damage.

The facility/property owner, who aided in the capture of Smith, declined to pursue trespassing charges.
