Major Crime Detectives Investigate In Custody Death

Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Major Crime Detectives are investigating the death of male a being held in the Spokane County Jail.

On June 13, 2018, at approximately 8:50 p.m., Spokane County Deputies were requested to respond to a possible assault at the jail.

Spokane County Jail Staff told the responding Deputy there were two inmates housed together in a cell.  At approximately 8:35 p.m., a Corrections Officer entered the cell to accommodate an inmate’s request to move to another room because his cellmate was acting “crazy”.  As the requesting inmate began the move, the Correction Officer noticed the inmate in the cell, who was lying face down on his bunk, was not moving.  The Officer immediately called for emergency medical assistance to include Spokane Fire and AMR.

Despite the efforts of medical staff, the inmate was pronounced deceased a short time later.

Spokane County Sheriff’s Major Crimes Detectives were also summoned to the scene to continue the investigation.

Preliminary information gained during the investigation indicates the inmate may have experienced a medical emergency but nothing at this early stage of the investigation has been ruled out.

The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an investigation into the inmate’s cause and manner of death, which depending on possible testing and toxicology, could take several weeks/months.  They will also release the male’s name at a later time when appropriate to do so.

This investigation is ongoing and no further information is available at this time.
