SWAT Team and Negotiators Successful: Felony DV Suspect Surrenders
The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team and Hostage Negotiation Team (HNT) successfully ended a standoff this afternoon when the suspect surrendered after their arrival.
On May 14, 2019, at approximately 9:00 a.m., Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of a domestic violence call.
The victim reported the suspect, 55-year-old Tony L. Christmann, assaulted and strangled her at a residence located in the 5200 block of S. Aspen Rd. during the evening of May 13, 2019. She said Christmann was probably still at the home.
At approximately 11:00 a.m., Deputies contacted Christmann who indeed was inside the residence. During the contact, Christmann was told he needed to exit the residence, but he refused, telling Deputies to get a warrant. Christmann was observed looking out the windows, but he would not surrender to Deputies despite saying he would.
At approximately 12:00 p.m., after several attempts to coax Christmann to exit the house and surrender, Deputies began the process to obtain a warrant. With information Christmann was possibly armed or had access to weapons, the SWAT Team, HNT, and additional personnel were called to the scene to assist in safely taking Christmann into custody.
SIRT Team volunteers also responded to assist with traffic control, closing a portion of Westbow Blvd. for a short period of time.
Just after 1:00 p.m., with a signed search warrant obtained, SWAT Team members, with the aid of armored tactical rescue vehicles approached the residence while HNT members continued to try to get Christmann to surrender. The SWAT Team gave continued announcements commanding Christmann to surrender peacefully and that a search warrant had been obtained, Christmann finally exited the residence and was safely taken into custody.
Christmann was transported and booked into the Spokane County Jail for Assault 2nd Degree (DV).
