Traffic Investigators at the Scene of Fatal Hit & Run Vehicle/Pedestrian Crash on Sprague and Hayford

Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit Investigators responded to the scene of a fatal vehicle/pedestrian collision earlier this evening.  The driver of the vehicle initially stopped after hitting the victim, but soon fled the scene.  The adult male victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.

On May 16, 2019, just after 9:00 p.m., Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the report of a vehicle/pedestrian collision on Hayford Rd. at Sprague, in Airway Heights.

Arriving Deputies learned the pedestrian was attempting to cross Hayford Rd., from east to west, when the driver of the vehicle struck the victim as the vehicle traveled south on Hayford Rd.   After the collision, the driver stopped but later fled the area to the south.

Medical personnel arrived and provide medical care, but despite their efforts, the male was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Traffic Unit Investigators were called to continue the investigation.  SIRT Team Volunteers responded to the area to assist with traffic control as Hayford will be closed in the area for several hours while the scene is measured, scanned, and evidence is collected.

The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the name of the decedent at a later date, when appropriate.

Anyone who witnessed this incident or can help investigators identify the fleeing driver is asked to call Corporal Jeff Welton at 509-477-3237.

Any updates will be provided tomorrow after or when appropriate to do so.
