A Male was Fatally Injured After He Hits a Deputy’s Vehicle and Crashes During the Subsequent Pursuit

A Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputy’s patrol car was hit by a male who fled during a “welfare check” call.  The caller stated the man was slumped over and possibly doing drugs in his vehicle, which remained running while parked in a store parking lot.  During the attempt to contact the male, he fled, striking a Deputy’s patrol car in the process.  Deputies pursued the suspect, who lost control of his vehicle, left the roadway near the intersection of Hwy. 27 and Dishman Mica, and crashed.  Life-saving medical attention was provided, but unfortunately, the male was pronounced deceased at the scene.

On September 8, 2020, Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a welfare check in the Albertsons’ parking lot, located at Hwy. 27 and 32nd Avenue.  An employee reported the man was slumped over in a running vehicle and was possibly doing drugs.

When Deputies arrived and attempted to contact the male, he suddenly took off, striking one of the Deputies’ patrol cars.

Deputies pursued the suspect, who continued to try and evade them as he went south on Hwy. 27 in excess of the speed limit.

Near Dishman Mica, his vehicle left the roadway and crashed into the treed area on the northwest corner.

Deputies located the vehicle and, finding no pulse, began CPR.  Unfortunately, despite their life-saving efforts, the suspect succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Spokane Police Department was requested to investigate this incident to ensure an independent and impartial investigation.

The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the name of the deceased at a later time, when appropriate.

No uninvolved citizens or Deputies were injured during this incident.
