Legislative Law Changes and How They Affect You
As many of you know, the Washington State Legislature passed sweeping new law changes concerning police reform that were signed into law by the Governor. We want to be clear; we are still here for our Citizens, and we will respond to calls for service. However, these changes to laws will impact how and what we can do in response to calls for service. These changes are confusing, with some literally contradicting each other, causing confusion across the state.
After careful consideration and consultation with our legal advisors, we want to provide you with the following information to keep you, the Citizens we serve, informed of how these legislative changes affect and constrain how we can legally address criminal activity.
We have also provided the names and contact information for the Washington State Legislative Representatives and Senators who serve Spokane County. Please, be respectful when contacting our Legislators. Some supported these changes, while others did not. If you want your voice to be heard, be respectful and civil. Let them know your thoughts on these restrictions, the criminal justice system, sentencing guidelines, and the release of charged suspects with little or no bail.
This is your Community, your State, and your Public Safety. Let them know your thoughts on Public Safety and Law Enforcement’s ability to enforce laws and hold criminals accountable.
