Deputies Arrest Suspect for Felony Assault and Kidnapping
Spokane Valley Deputies responded to the report of a female who was severely beaten. The victim was provided medical attention for serious, non-life-threatening injuries. Through the investigation, Deputies developed probable cause to arrest 38-year-old Brandon L. Marquardt for Assault 2nd Degree (DV) and Kidnapping 1st Degree (DV).
On September 13, 2021, at approximately 12:05 a.m., Spokane Valley Deputies responded to a witness reporting she passed a female arguing with a male. She turned around and located the female, injured and bleeding, on the side of the road. The male, later identified as 38-year-old Brandon L. Marquardt, left the area driving a red Subaru hatchback.
Deputies, Spokane Valley Firefighters, and AMR personnel arrived and provided medical aid to the adult female victim. Due to the severity of her numerous injuries, she was transported to the hospital for additional care and observation.
Deputy Kim Sipes spoke with the witness who said she was going through the roundabout on Barker Road, north of I-90, and noticed the victim laying on the ground next to the passenger’s side of a dark red 1990’s Subaru hatchback. The victim was crawling away from the vehicle on her hands and knees and appeared frightened and injured. The witness made eye contact with Marquardt as she drove past. Marquardt left in the Subaru as the witness turned around and contacted the victim.
Deputy Veronica Van Patten observed and noted the victim’s extensive injuries to her face and body.
At the hospital, the victim told Deputy Sipes her boyfriend, Marquardt, assaulted her. They are both from Montana, and she recently tried to break up with him, but he found her and told her to get in his car. Due to Marquardt’s violent history with the victim and her fear of being harmed or possibly killed, she got in the car. Marquardt drove to Spokane, where they have been staying for the last three days. During that time, Marquardt told her she could not leave and remained with her the entire time. The victim said she did not feel free to leave due to Marquardt’s threats and violent past.
Earlier in the evening, September 12, 2021, at approximately 7:00 p.m., Marquardt told the victim to get in the Subaru. He said he was driving to the airport to take a flight, and she could take his car and drive back to Montana. Marquardt got lost on the way and began slapping the victim. As he continued to drive around, Marquardt began beating her with a closed fist. This went on for several hours, with the victim unsuccessfully pleading for Marquardt to take her to the hospital. Marquardt continued to drive around, threatening to kill the victim as he continued to assault her.
Fearing she would die, she tried to exit the vehicle when Marquardt stopped on Barker Road. Marquardt tried to stop her, but she fought back and struggled free, falling to the ground on the side of the road where the witness found her. She said Marquardt drove away, and the witness helped her.
With this information, probable cause was established to arrest Marquardt for Assault 2nd Degree (DV) and Kidnapping 1st Degree (DV).
Deputies learned of a possible location for Marquardt and located the Subaru parked there.
After making contact with Marquardt, he eventually agreed to exit the residence and was arrested.
Marquardt was advised of his charges and his rights. Agreeing to provide a statement, Marquardt said the victim began hitting and kicking him while they were out on a drive. He never assaulted her in any way, and that the victim hit herself in the face with her fists causing her injuries. He explained she had done this in the past and was “really good” at making herself bleed. At one point, he asked the victim if she wanted to go to the hospital and said he drove her to one, but the victim refused to get out of the car.
Later, he stopped the vehicle on the side of the road to check on the victim, and she began screaming hysterically. He said that’s when the witness drove by. Marquardt said he never talked to the witness or asked the witness to call 911, explaining he doesn’t like to call 911, and drove away.
Marquardt was transported and booked into the Spokane County Jail for Assault 2nd Degree (DV) and Kidnapping 1st Degree (DV), where he remains with his bond set at $50,000 by the courts.
