Fatal Auto/Ped Collision Investigation on West Plains
Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies and Traffic Unit Collision Investigators responded to a vehicle/pedestrian collision scene late last night. The pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the vehicle was cooperative during the investigation and was not charged.
On September 29, 2021, at approximately 10:15 pm., Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a reported auto/ped collision on W. Westbow Blvd. and S. Spotted Road in Spokane County.
Arriving Deputies observed an adult male, later identified as the driver of the Subaru involved in the crash, performing CPR on the adult male pedestrian. Deputies took over life-saving attempts until Firefighters and medical personnel arrived.
Unfortunately, despite efforts, the pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Traffic Unit Investigators were called to the scene, assisted by SIRT Team volunteers who provided traffic control.
The involved driver of the Subaru was cooperative with Investigators and agreed to be evaluated for impairment by a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE). After the evaluation, the driver did not appear to be impaired. The driver agreed to provide a voluntary blood sample for further testing.
From the initial information gained at the scene, the pedestrian had been the driver of a Honda SUV involved in an earlier, unrelated one-vehicle crash at the location. He called for a tow truck and started to cross Westbow on foot to contact the tow truck driver who had just arrived.
The driver of the Subaru was traveling east on Westbow when he noticed a tow truck, with its lights flashing, parked on the north side of the road. He noticed a vehicle parked behind the tow truck and another vehicle parked on the south side of the intersection. Suddenly, he noticed a male had walked out in front of his vehicle. The driver said it happened so quickly he didn’t have time to react before his Subaru hit the man. He immediately pulled over to check on the male, began CPR as instructed by the Spokane Regional Communications (SREC) 911 operator, until law enforcement arrived.
The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the name of the deceased at a later time, when appropriate.
The driver of the vehicle was not charged, and this remains an active investigation. No further information is available at this time.
