UPDATE: Homicide Investigation – Hayford Road


The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the deceased found in a field near N. Hayford Road and W. Balmer Road as 48-year-old Jeffrey Hayes.  His Cause of Death was determined to be a “penetrating gunshot wound of torso” and his manner of death was listed as a homicide.    

 

Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Detectives continue to investigate what led up to the discovery of Hayes’ body on December 2, 2021, at approximately 10:10 am.   

 

Anyone who had contact with 48-year-old Jeffrey Hayes within approximately the last week preceding his death, or who may have information that could help shed light on who may have caused his death and why, is urged to call Detective Dean Meyer at 509-477-3159, reference #10159023.  

 

Detective Meyer would also like to talk to anyone who observed the pictured white 1990 Mazda 4-door sedan in or around the West Plains/Airway Heights area during the early morning hours of December 2, 2021.  Please call 509-477-3159, reference #10159023.

UPDATE: Death Investigation - Hayford Road

 

Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Detectives have cleared the scene on Hayford Road.  With the assistance of the Spokane County Sheriff’s Air Support Unit UAS Team, Forensic Unit Technicians, and Traffic Unit Investigators, Detectives processed the scene.  

 

In the coming days, the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the decedent's identity along with the cause and manner of death. 

 

Major Crimes Detectives received information at the scene that indicates this is possibly a homicide. They continue to comb over evidence and information as they work to determine the facts, circumstances, and timeline leading up to today’s discovery of the deceased.

 

As this is an active investigation, no further information is available at this time.

Major Crimes Detectives Begin Death Investigation

 

Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Deputies and Major Crimes Detective are in the initial steps of a death investigation on N. Hayford Road.

 

On December 2, 2021, at approximately 10:10 am., Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of a deceased person in the area of N. Hayford Road and W. Balmer Road.  

 

Deputies located a deceased person, immediately secured the scene, and contacted Major Crimes Detectives.

 

Detectives are now in the initial phase of the investigation as they work to determine the identity of the deceased and the facts of what occurred.  

 

We will provide an update as soon as Investigators have factual information to release. 

 

Please avoid the area and allow Detectives to conduct their investigation safely.
