Nicer Weather Means More Pedestrians!
Spokane County, WA—With the warmer spring weather outside, we will be seeing more pedestrians and pedestrian safety enforcement! More than 20 pedestrians are killed or seriously injured each year in Spokane County. Most pedestrian crashes occur during clear weather,
from the hours of 3:00pm to 9:00pm and with a pedestrian in the roadway. Here are a few safety tips to follow.
Pedestrians -
Don’t dart out mid-block in front of a vehicle.
After dark, wear bright/light colors and carry a lighted flashlight.
Use the sidewalks not the roadway.
Cross at lighted intersections or marked crosswalks.
Make eye contact with the drivers before stepping into the crosswalk.
Put down the cell phone. This is not the time to be texting or talking.
Don’t drink and walk. Ride the bus, call a taxi, Uber or a friend.
Drivers -
Watch out for pedestrians wearing dark clothing at night.
Slow down and look for pedestrians when turning or entering a crosswalk.
Every intersection is a legal crosswalk whether it is marked or not.
Before passing any stopped vehicle near an intersection, look for pedestrians!
Remember, they could be stopping for a pedestrian.
Don’t drive distracted. Put down the cell phone.
Be responsible, don’t drive impaired. Ride the bus, call a taxi, Uber, or a friend.
Remember our streets are busy with cars, buses, bicyclists and pedestrians. We can all work together to make our community safer by remembering to share our roadways. Help Spokane have safe streets.
