Most Latex paint and other water-based paints are not hazardous wastes. Both the can and contents can be disposed of as garbage once the paint has dried completely. Remove lid and place can with 1 inch or less of liquid paint in a well-ventilated area, preferably outside, safe from children and animals. You can mix larger amounts of paint with sand, litter or coffee grounds to solidify it before putting it in the trash. The Spokane County North and Valley Transfer Stations accept solidified cans of Latex paint at the regular garbage rate 7 days a week. Note: Mildew resistant Latex paint may contain mercury and should be taken to a Household Hazardous Waste area.
Acrylics, Oils, Synthetic Auto Enamel, Model Airplane Paint and Lead-Based Paints: ALWAYS take to a Household Hazardous Waste Drop Site. The Spokane County North and Valley Transfer Station’s HHW area is open on Saturdays and Sundays. The Waste to Energy Facility’s HHW area is open 7 days a week. Free disposal to residents, limit of 15 gallons per visit.
The Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generators (CESQG) program provides two drop-off locations for commercial hazardous wastes. Businesses can call 509-202-7397 to schedule an appointment at the North or Valley Transfer Stations on Saturdays and Sundays. You must be an exempt hazardous waste generator per all applicable regulations.
