SIRR Team Investigating July 3, 2017 Officer Involved Shooting
The Spokane Investigative Regional Response Team (SIRR) is investigating a Spokane Police Officer involved shooting which occurred on July 3, 2017 in the 5900 block of South Mt. Vernon Rd in Spokane County.
The incident began just after 12:30 a.m., when a victim reported she believed her ex-boyfriend, later identified as 53-year-old Daniel Craven, had damaged items in her yard and was at her residence armed with a shotgun. She said she was scared and did not look out her window to see if it was Craven but he had been harassing her since they broke up. She also said she believed she heard a shotgun fired outside her residence just prior to her 911 call.
Due to the serious nature of this domestic violence call, and the close proximity to the City of Spokane, Spokane Police Officers responded to assist responding Spokane County Deputies.
Spokane Police Officers were the first to arrive in the area. Within a minute of arriving in the area, a Spokane Police Officer advised, via radio, hearing gunfire. Just prior to the officer’s radio transmission, the victim told the dispatcher she had just heard another shot and began screaming on the phone.
Moments later, two officers fired their weapons, striking Craven. Officers at the scene provided immediate medical aid and Craven was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
A handgun located near Craven was seized as evidence.
The Officer Involved Critical Incident Protocol was implemented and SIRR Team Investigators and Spokane County Forensic Personnel responded to the scene to conduct an investigation and process the scene.
Investigators urge anyone who witnessed or can provide information regarding this incident and has not been contacted by investigators to call Crime Check at 509-456-2233.
