Late Fees Suspended for Sewer and Solid Waste

Continues through end of May 2020.

SPOKANE COUNTY, March 31, 2020 – The Spokane County Board of Commissioners has unanimously approved a resolution suspending the accrual of late fees, penalties and interest on unpaid charges for both solid waste and sewer billing. The suspension will be in effect for a three-month period that includes March, April and May.

Environmental Services Director Kevin Cooke made the recommendation to the BoCC, citing the hardships confronting some county residents during the Governor’s “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” order. “Many of the families and business we serve are facing a financial crisis because of lost business or unemployment. This is an opportunity to help lighten their burden and stay Inland Strong,” Cooke said.

During an average month, the department collects approximately $55,000 in late fees and penalties. The three-month suspension could mean a loss of up $165,000 for the county.
