County Commissioners Extend Suspension
of Late Fees and Penalties through 2020

SPOKANE COUNTY, September 8, 2020 – This afternoon, the Spokane County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution extending the suspension of late fees, penalties and interest on unpaid charges for both sewer and solid waste billings. The suspension will be in effect through the end of 2020.

Environmental Services Director Kevin Cooke made the recommendation to the BoCC, citing the hardships confronting some county residents as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. “Many of the families and business we serve are in the midst of a financial crisis because of unemployment or lost business. This is an opportunity to support the community by easing that burden,” Cooke said.

During an average month, prior to the start of the suspension in March, the department assessed approximately $55,000 in late fees and penalties. The additional four-month suspension therefore represents a reduction in billings of up to $220,000 for the county.
